What Is GDE Admission Placement?

The GDE Admission Placement, as the name suggests simply means the process by which the Gauteng Department of Education assigns a school to a learner after that learner’s parent or guardian have gone through the application process and have successfully submitted an application form on the learner’s behalf— especially for Grade 1 and Grade 8.

This means that when a parent or guardian finally submits their application, the department goes through these applications and assigns a suitable school for that particular learner.

  • The assigning of schools to learners is based on these factors;
    How close the applicant’s home address is to the school to be assigned
  • If there is a space available at the school that was chosen by the applicant
  • Whether there are feeder zones where the applicant chose their preferred school
  • Whether the applicant already has a sibling at the preferred school
  • The applicant’s last school attended

The placement usually happens a few months after the application is closed. Parents and guardians are updated on the placement process, so they are sent either an sms, email, or they can visit their self-portal for information on placement.
